Kicking around on a piece of ground… how cats spend their days

The movements of ten cats living in relatively close proximity to each other in Shamley Green, a village in the English county of Surrey, were the subject of a recent study. Each feline was outfitted with a GPS tracking collar, and their activities monitored over a twenty four hour period.

Some of the findings may prove surprising though. As any moggy owner knows, cats are territorial, but here they appeared, at times, to share turf with their neighbours, so long the felines in question had no direct contact with each other.

It’s also interesting to see how far some cats roamed, relatively speaking, from their home, with some appearing to visit what looked to be an isolated spot, some distance from their usual stomping ground, once a day. What would be the deal there?
