Write more, about anything, on a personal website, not social media

2 January 2026

Fernando Borretti:

I will often find a blog post on Hacker News that really resonates. And when I go to check the rest of the site there’s three other posts. And I think: I wish you’d write more! When I find someone whose writing I really connect with, I like to read everything they have written, or at least a tractable subset of their most interesting posts.

I’m the same.

There are probably quite a few people writing, or posting publicly, but much of that content ends up on social media, rather than a personal website or blog. Let’s do more to encourage independent online publishing on personal websites and blogs.

Hi there. I arrived here because os this post was shared on Mastodon. And then I sit this:

“And when I go to check the rest of the site…”

Now, after reading and enjoying your posts for a good number of minutes it’s time for a comment, of course. Oh, and the disassociated RSS was added to my reading list 😉

I also started my first personal site in 1997 by hand coding it. Good times! When social media was starting, I ended up abandoning my blog. Shame on me! Thankfully, a few years ago I went back to blogging and couldn’t be more happy with posting on my own space.

    Have a great 2026!

Hey Vlad, happy new year. Thanks for visiting my website and leaving a comment, much appreciated 🙂

I see you live in Portugal now. I spent two months there (some years ago), and stopped in Porto for a few days. In addition to a whole lot of other places. I always thought I’d like to live in Vila Real (in the north).

It seems we have a few things in common when it comes to the web. I used to spend quite a bit of time on the socials in the early days, mainly Twitter (when it used to be fun) but never became too involved in it. I’m thankful for that now, there’s no going passed your own website 🙂
