Diane Bell awarded 2023 Hazel Rowley Literary Fellowship

9 March 2023

Canberra based Australian author and anthropologist Diane Bell, was yesterday named recipient of the 2023 Hazel Rowley Literary Fellowship.

Diane was awarded $20,000 for her proposed biography of the relationship between Ngarrindjeri woman Louisa Karpany, née Kontinyeri (c1840–1921) and George Mason (1811–1876), sub-Protector of Aborigines at Wellington, South Australia.

Created in 2011 to honour the memory of late Australian writer Hazel Rowley, the fellowship is awarded annually to support the work of Australian biographers. Unlike many literary awards, the Hazel Rowley Literary Fellowship is awarded to a writer based on a biography proposal, rather than an already completed, published work.

14 January 2023

Nine Australian writers have been named on the 2023 Hazel Rowley Literary Fellowship shortlist for biography writing. Unlike a literary award, where an author is recognised for a completed work, the fellowship invites writers to pitch an idea for a biography or memoir, they are writing, or plan to write.

The fellowship was created to honour the memory of Australian biography writer Hazel Rowley, who died in 2011. Past winners of the fellowship include Mandy Sayer in 2021, who wrote Those Dashing McDonagh Sisters: Australia’s First Female Filmmaking Team, a biography about the work of pioneering Australian filmmakers Isabel, Phyllis, and Paulette McDonagh.

The winner of the 2023 fellowship will be announced on Wednesday 8 March 2023, following the Hazel Rowley Memorial lecture, during Adelaide Writers’ Week.

2022 Hazel Rowley Fellowship shortlist announced

17 January 2022

The shortlist for the 2022 Hazel Rowley Fellowship has been published. Created in memory of late British born Australian writer and biographer Hazel Rowley, the fellowship supports Australian writers of biographies. Authors submit ideas to the organisers, who select what they consider to be the best proposal. This year though, the field seems particularly tight:

We had an extremely strong field of applications this year, with a wide range of biographical subjects. This made the shortlisting hard,’ said Della Rowley, Hazel’s sister. ‘We received a large number of high-quality proposals. Perhaps as a result of COVID-19 lockdowns, writers were busy thinking about good topics for biographies.

The winner will be announced on Wednesday 2 March 2022.
